I Love (Hate) Spinnerbaits…

If you have followed the journey of Summer Day Fishing Co. or have ever fished with me, you know that I. Love. Spinnerbaits.

Most days.

Some days, I absolutely hate them.

The Beginning of a Love Affair

I still remember when I first “got” the idea of a spinnerbait.

When I was younger, I didn’t like them. They were difficult to store, bulky, and I always somehow ended up with weeds on them by the time they got to the boat. Inline spinners were better anyway, so why bother using these things?

However, when I was a Freshman in college, I went out and was getting skunked on the water. Figured I would just tie on a spinnerbait since nothing else was working for me.

The fish - and myself - loved it. I went home happy after catching a few decent bass in the last half hour I was out on the water.

The Peak of a Love Affair

I guess we cant really call this the peak of my love affair with spinnerbaits. Afterall, the entire thing that started Summer Day Fishing Co. was me making my own spinnerbait in a color pattern that I didn’t see anyone else producing.

If you are wondering what pattern that is, it is the “Devil” color scheme that we now produce in virtually all of our lures.

Ever since that day out on the water where the spinnerbait saved my butt, I have always carried spinnerbaits with me out on the water.

Everything from small spinnerbaits at the 1/16oz weight up to over an ounce - depending on what I am targeting. Also, I have to have multiple colors and blade configurations because you never know what the fish want. Right? Right???

The Unfortunate Truth About Spinnerbaits

The unfortunate truth about spinnerbaits is that some days, they just don’t work.

I know a lot of anglers who have given up on spinnerbaits because they have tried them a few times and didn’t have much luck.

The truth is that when I use spinnerbaits, it is feast or famine. The days that the spinnerbait bite is on fire are some of the most productive days of fishing I have ever had. The days that the fish aren’t interested, are slow…and you have to change baits.

The Other Unfortunate Truth

The other unfortunate truth about spinnerbaits is that I don’t need to carry 10+ options every time I go out on the water.

I know, I know - it is fun to have all of these options! I agree, that’s why I do it!

The truth of the matter is that if you are strapped for cash or limited on space, you really only need one or two spinnerbaits.

  • A white-based, nickel willowleaf blade spinnerbait. Accent colors can be of your liking. I generally like chartreuse or red as an accent color.
  • A larger, dark (black, purple, blue) based, colorado blade spinnerbait. Again, accent colors can be of your liking.

These two will cover most of your situations relatively well and help you find that spinnerbait high that all of us get when the fish start biting.

See you out there,

John Jay Thomas
